In Belgium, with its past as a colonial power, the issue of decolonisation has been much discussed. When CCIVS, an umbrella organisation for international volunteer organisations launched the Decolonise project, it was therefore a natural fit for SCI Belgium to participate. Afroditi and Myllie from Belgium, who are present at the ICM, SCI's international annual meeting in Vienna, spoke about SCI Belgium's role in the project.

Together with several other organizations, Afroditi and Myllie have worked to better understand how the colonial legacy affects international volunteer work in different ways. The project is developing a ”self-assessment tool”. It can be used to examine oneself and one's own organisation. Within SCI Belgium, the issue of decolonisation is raised in the preparatory meetings organised for aspiring volunteers. In this way, volunteers become more aware of the effects of colonialism and how they themselves act.
